Why is this site my hobby? My aversion to grocery stores began when I had an active toddler who disliked the grocery shopping experience as much as I used to like it. Trips to the grocery store were a nightmare and what was I going to do as a punishment? Tell the child "If you don't behave at the grocery store I won't take you anymore?", that would have been the ultimate victory for my son. Instead I searched for a way to spend less time at the grocery store, less time in the kitchen and have more time to spend with my son. This website will teach you my secrets.
The site is designed to be an online storage area of all of the information that I have gathered about Once-A-Month Cooking, Bulk Cooking, Batch Cooking, Crock Pot Cooking, Planned Leftovers, Master Mixes and other time saving cooking methods in the last 5 years.  I am also adding some basics of Food Storage. Since the tragic events of September 11, 2001, I have noticed that many people are thinking about being prepared for an emergency of some sort. I feel that it is wise to be prepared because we never know when there might be an earthquake, black out, tornado, hurricane, snow storm, or other natural disaster. If you are interested in storing some food in case of emergency take a look at my food storage pages for help.

When I started Once A Month Cooking (OAMC), my life was out of control. There were far too many nights that we would eat out because time had slipped away from me and I needed to get my son in bed, I started cooking a meal only to find that I was missing one vital ingredient, there was nothing in the house for dinner or nothing we had on hand sounded good because we were in a food rut! Our family was spending way too much money on restaurant meals that I wasn't really enjoying, I was resenting them because they made me feel like a failure as a housewife.

At first I practiced true OAMC but over time, I have adapted the principles of bulk cooking to fit my needs, the time I have and to take advantage of what is on sale locally. I have found that a little planning goes a LONG way toward saving time, money and sanity. If you read over the principles presented on this website and apply the ones you like, you'll find yourself spending less time in the kitchen and more time doing the things you LOVE! I know I save hundreds of dollars a month and we are eating better than ever before.
I highly recommend the 30 Day Gourmet Freezer Manual. The recipes are great and the book contains planning forms that all alone are worth the cost of the book. I bought other Cook Once a Month Books but I didn't REALLY start doing once a month cooking until I found the 30 Day Gourmet System.
I also recommend Master Cook by Sierra for keeping track of all of your recipes. You can usually find an older version for a reasonable price (under $10.00). I use Master Cook 5 with the latest patches from the Sierra site. Here are some links to help you with Master Cook.  Master Cook is being discontinued. I'm looking for some alternatives and will keep you posted.
